# 3 - One Phrase That Will Change My Life

I saw a clip recently of Steve Harvey speaking and it was a “right place, right time” kind of thing. I have always considered myself to be a person who was thankful, but in recent times, I’ve come to intimately discover the value of deep gratitude. Gratitude that makes you close your eyes, sit still and feel it melt into your soul. When you open your eyes, you see the world through a different lens.

Is it because of age and the inherent wisdom that comes with time and life experience? Is it because I’ve come to realize how completely precious every single second of life is since the sudden death of my older brother? Is it because of a perception that time is passing more quickly than I’d like and my babies are growing and changing right before my eyes? It’s all of that… and more.

What he said resonated with me like the sound of a gong. I watched it over and over again.

It was three words. One phrase that will change my life.

He said “Stop saying I GOT to…Change one word in that sentence and everything about your life changes.” I was intrigued. “When you say I GOT to, you take all of your opportunities and all of your blessings and you wrap them up in stress…you take all the stress off of it when you say… I GET to.”

It was like the seeds of gratitude that were already in my heart burst into full bloom like the most beautiful field of wildflowers, vibrant with color, spreading as far as the eye could see.

I GET to wake up in the morning.

I GET to breathe.

I GET to move my body.

I GET to kiss my husband.

I GET to snuggle with my babies.

I GET to give tickle kisses.

I GET to help them get dressed.

I GET to teach them, over and over, how to brush their teeth.

I GET to be excited when there is peepee and poopy in the potty.

I GET to change a diaper and sing silly songs.

I GET to do dance parties in the living room - Danny Go style.

I GET to clean up a home that I love and teach my little ones how to do the same.

I GET to choose my attitude.

I GET to choose my influence on my children.

I GET to take them to the grocery store with me - all three - and teach them patience, how to choose the food that we buy and how NOT to unlock the stall door when Mommy is still sitting on the potty.

I GET to hear them laugh.

I GET to give hugs and dry tears and be the stable to their crazy. (Or maybe they are the stable to my crazy? Who actually knows?!?)

I GET to teach them.

I GET to love them.

I GET to help them learn and feel and process and grow.

I GET to have a family and a village of support.

I GET to stay up late and write blog posts when they come to my mind and I GET to be tired the next day when the kids wake up before the sun, but my heart is full.

I GET to figure out new rhythms and systems when the current ones don’t work anymore.

I GET to continue learning new things.

I GET to choose love over hate.

I GET to choose kindness over meanness.

I GET to choose courage over fear.

I GET to choose reasonability and open-mindedness.

I GET to choose my perspective and how I want to see the world.

Thank you, Steve Harvey, for bringing this to the forefront of my attention. Life is filled with “have to”s and “must do”s, but if we can reframe it in our minds and keep a perspective of gratitude, we just might find that everything in our lives, does in fact, change.❤️

XOXO,

Adrienne

"I GET to help my baby son learn to walk on the beach sand." That was a fun one;)

I totally agree with EVERYTHING you posted. You don't realize how fast life goes by. Things can change in an instant. Appreciate all the stuff you get to have. As we get older, it's those small moments that will bring the BIGGEST smile to your face ! Loved it.

Yes! I suppose time is going by at the same speed as it always has, but why does it seem so fast?? I think so much “busyness” happens and we don’t make enough time for the reflection that leads to the very deep gratitude. Well…I’m definitely working on it;) Thank you for taking the time to comment!❤️
